Abstract
With a growing data-centric world, the topic of mass data visualization continues to grow across industries, empowering businesses to make data-driven decisions, optimize processes and deliver personalized experiences. These datasets are often too large to be effectively analyzed and require advanced tools empowering users to make sense of the information they contain. Dashboard visualizations play an important role in this context, providing a concise and intuitive way to harness massive information into actual insights, offering an overview of the system statuses, key metrics and relevant content. However, designing dashboards that are visually appealing yet also user-friendly is essential for maximizing their impact. A thorough understanding of their functionality combined with key design can elevate the user experience, making dashboards informative, effective and intuitive.
This introductory/ intermediate course in dashboard design aims to address this by providing an overview of the fundamentals for designing effective dashboards. Through the course, participants will also gain a solid foundation in the evaluation of dashboards and learn to apply best practices in their own work.
The course is designed to include an extensive hands-on part, providing participants with the opportunity of analyzing and assessing a variety of dashboard examples. They will also collaborate to design and build their own dashboards, applying the insights and guidelines offered through the course.
Benefits for attendees
The first section of the course will be used to review the fundamental principles in designing dashboards. Participants will then practice evaluating several example dashboards. Following this, the team participants will build an effective dashboard following the guidelines and principles taught in the previous section. Through this structured approach, attendees are expected to enhance their professional skills, master core principles of dashboard design, and familiarize themselves with best practices.
Course Content
The course will feature presentations, and discussions to enhance learning. The presentations will examine the following topics:
- Introduction
- Fundamental Principles of Dashboard Design
- Visual Designs
- Mass Data Visualization
- Evaluating Dashboard User Interfaces
- Building Effective Dashboards
