Gothenburg, founded in 1621, is the second largest city in Sweden and the largest port in Nordic countries. With a population of more than 1 million in the wider metropolitan area, is the world’s most sustainable destination, seven years in a row (2016-2023), according to the Global Destination Sustainability Index. And in 2021, Lonely Planet added an additional sustainability award to this list when unveiled its Best in Travel 2021 list, naming Gothenburg the world’s Best Sustainable City Stay. 95 percent of the city’s hotel rooms are environmentally certified and almost all public transport runs on renewable electricity!

Gothenburg, despite its northerly latitude, temperatures are quite mild throughout the year and warmer than places at a similar latitude, because of the moderating influence of the Gulf Stream. During the summer, daylight extends to 18 hours.

Step inside one of Gothenburg's many museums and learn more about everything from arts and culture to nature, automotive and maritime history. Pick and choose between impressive collections or plunge into exciting guest performances by international stars.

Gothenburg is also home to many students, as the city includes the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology, and headquarters of leading industries like Volvo, that was founded here in 1927, SKF also founded here in 1907 and AstraZeneca.
